A message from Lisa Munro, our President & CEO
As the new President & CEO of Covenant Foundation, I am proud and humbled to lead a team who is as passionate about philanthropy as I am, and we feel privileged to partner with generous donors like you. We know you have choices about where to give, and we are tremendously grateful for your support.
You are the reason we were able to invest more than $2.5 million at 21 Covenant hospitals and continuing care sites across Alberta in 2022-23. Your generosity enabled us to help Covenant healthcare teams pioneer new approaches to care, innovate solutions to system pressures and gaps in service, and better address the changing health needs of Albertans now and into the future.
Below you will find our 2022-23 digital annual report, including a one-minute video from my team. I also invite you to click on the links below the video to read about the important health needs we funded with your support. We hope you will feel inspired by our stories about the impact we made together and are excited to learn about our new focus on six crucial health priorities.
On behalf of our board and the entire team, thank you for continuing to help us create vibrant communities of health and healing for Albertans through every stage of life.
With gratitude,
Lisa Munro, President & CEO

A message from our Board Chair and Interim CEO
You are the reason we were able to provide more than $2.5 million for leading-edge programs and services, state-of-the-art equipment, enhanced care spaces, and specialized research and education to help transform health care at the 20 Covenant hospitals and continuing care sites we supported across Alberta.
Thanks to you, our support included:
- Providing 15 Covenant sites with almost $583,000 to support compassionate care and programs such as music and recreation therapy for long-term care residents, and homecare for palliative patients.
- Investing over $190,000 in state-of-the-art cardiac ultrasound technology at the Misericordia Community Hospital to make it easier for clinicians to diagnose patients and provide more immediate care.
- Purchasing nearly $145,000 of bariatric equipment like specialized beds, stretchers and lifts that help to provide safer and more comfortable care for patients across the province who are wider or taller than average.
Your support makes a tremendous difference for Albertans at our 21 foundation-supported Covenant sites that provide: over 900 hospital beds, 2,300 continuing care and palliative beds, 23,500 surgeries, 314,000 outpatient visits, 123,000 emergency visits, and delivered over 8,700 babies each year.

This year has also brought much change to our foundation, too. After nine years of dedicated service, our foundation’s CEO, Tracy Sopkow, has taken on a new opportunity. Leaving a legacy of excellence, Tracy helped our foundation achieve accreditation from the Imagine Canada Standards Program this year, confirming our commitment to the highest standards of accountability, transparency and governance. We are so grateful for Tracy's vision and leadership, and wish her the very best in her new role.
We continue to be sincerely grateful to you for your ongoing support as we work hard to help transform health care for all Albertans – through every stage of life – in the moments when it is needed most. And we look forward to welcoming a new leader as we focus on continuing priorities like our Room to Care. Time to Give. campaign to raise $2.6 million for the new Misericordia emergency department, opening in fall 2023.
With heartfelt thanks,
Carole Karbonik, Chair, Board of Directors
Alecia Baldwin, Interim CEO

Our accreditation confirms our commitment to the highest standards of accountability, transparency and governance.
Covenant Foundation respectfully acknowledges that our central office and several foundation-supported Covenant sites are located on Treaty 6 territory and Region 4 of the Métis Nation of Alberta, a traditional land and gathering place of diverse Indigenous peoples including the Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway/Saulteaux/Anishinaabe, Inuit, and many others. We also support Covenant sites all across Alberta on Treaty 4, 6 and 7 territory, as well as the Regions 2, 3 and 4 of the Métis Nation of Alberta. We honour and respect the people whose histories, languages and cultures have been here for thousands of years and continue to influence our vibrant community. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
