Covenant Health is privileged to walk with patients and families on their most difficult journey as they face the realities of a terminal illness or losing a loved one to illness.
Covenant Health has been a leader in palliative care since opening its first hospital-based palliative care program at the Edmonton General Hospital in 1985. The program grew out of an identified need for more holistic, multidisciplinary approaches, and better understanding of the complex/ evolving nature of pain. Building on this expertise, the Palliative End of Life Care Institute responds to the growing need for end of life care in the province and ensure patients facing serious and complex illnesses have access to a full and comprehensive spectrum of coordinated health services. The Institute focuses on palliative care from a terminal diagnosis to end of life needs through:
- Education: promoting palliative and end of life care learning and education.
- Research: developing knowledge through research.
- Clinical Support: influencing clinical practices based on leading practice to improve the quality and comprehensiveness of palliative and end of life services.
- Public Outreach: developing and strengthening partnerships and
engaging communities in support of palliative and end of life care.

With your help Covenant Foundation has raised over $3 million since 2012. We still have another $2 million to raise over the next two years to reach our goal of $5 million for the Palliative End of Life Care Institute.
Each year, Covenant Health is privileged to walk with patients and families on their most difficult journey as they face the realities of a terminal illness or losing a loved one to illness. Providing quality care at end of life is at the heart of our mission to serve with compassion, uphold the sacredness of life in all stages, and care for the whole person—body, mind and soul. The number of Albertans who will require these services is expected to increase by 33% by the year 2020. In response to this growing need,
Covenant Health is working to enhance its leadership role through a comprehensive Palliative Care and End of Life Strategy. This includes supporting the Palliative End of Life Care Institute. Located at Grey Nuns Community Hospital, the Institute brings experts together to focus on research, programs, planning and education. Through this closely linked network of people, Covenant Health improves efforts to deliver palliative and end of life care across Alberta. Your support will ensure that all patients and families—no matter where they live in Alberta—have access to the support and holistic care they need when facing the challenges of living with life-threatening illnesses and the comfort measures they need at the end of life.
Covenant Health's campaign is to raise $12 million for this Institute. Covenant Foundation's commitment is $5 million of funding.
