Donating publicly traded securities, such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds, is one of the most tax-effective ways to support Covenant Foundation. By giving a gift of shares, you can make a significant impact on the health and lives of Albertans while enjoying substantial tax benefits.

  • Why Donate Shares

When you donate appreciated securities directly to Covenant Foundation, you:

    • Eliminate capital gains tax: Unlike selling your shares and donating the proceeds, donating the shares directly means you are not taxed on the capital gains.

    • Receive a charitable tax receipt: You’ll receive a receipt for the full fair market value of the shares on the date of transfer.

    • Maximize your impact: More of your gift goes toward supporting the programs and initiatives that matter most to you.

For example, a $10,000 donation of appreciated shares that originally cost $4,000 allows you to avoid paying capital gains tax on the $6,000 growth and provides you with a charitable tax receipt for $10,000.

  • How to Donate Shares

    3. Tax Receipt: Once the transfer is complete, you will receive a tax receipt for the full fair market value of the shares on the day they are received in our account.

It’s simple, efficient, and rewarding—for you and for the communities we serve.

  • Creating a Best-in-Class Training Centre for Healthcare Workers

It was the combination of education and health care that resonated with the board of trustees at the Edmonton Civic Employees Charitable Assistance Fund (ECECAF) and why they chose to donate $500,000 to Covenant Foundation for a state-of-the-art staff training space at the new Misericordia Emergency Department. This transformational gift from ECECAF is helping ensure frontline staff receive on-site training in the latest advances that will help save lives in our community.

  • Donor-funded, Leading-edge Equipment Improves Breast Cancer Surgery

Thanks to a generous $150,000 gift from the Dianne and Irving Kipnes Foundation, breast cancer patients at the Misericordia are receiving faster, safer and more precise surgeries with the help of a Faxitron® Trident® high-definition specimen radiography system. With more breast cancer surgeries performed at the Misericordia — about 1,500 every year — than at any other hospital in northern Alberta, the Faxitron machine helps patients have better outcomes by enabling surgeons in the operating room to quickly assess whether they’ve removed all the cancerous cells or pinpoint the location of tumours that have shrunk.
