Imagine you’ve just given birth.
Instead of holding your newborn close, you watch as nurses carefully bring your baby to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Monitors beep as caregivers work to understand what your baby needs.
You have questions. You’re worried. And you’re waiting for answers.
In the NICU, one of the most important things caregivers can offer parents during uncertain moments is clarity.
This Women’s Month, Covenant Foundation is celebrating the nurses who care for newborns and their mothers, and the donors whose generosity equips them with tools that bring confidence and reassurance during times of uncertainty.
One of those tools is a donor-funded brain monitoring system called amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG). This technology helps NICU teams gain a clearer picture of what is happening in a newborn’s brain during those critical early hours.

Knowledge is power
The aEEG monitor tracks a baby’s brain activity over time, helping clinicians identify patterns that may signal seizures or reduced oxygen to the brain.
For caregivers, that clearer picture helps them make informed decisions about care. For families, it brings something just as important: reassurance.
“Knowledge is power,” Tara says. “The more information and support we can provide, the more confident families become.”
By sharing what the team is seeing and explaining what it means, parents gain a better understanding of their baby’s condition and can take part in decisions about their care.
“I know I’ve done a really good job when families feel they can participate,” Tara says. “Helping them understand what’s happening allows them to make decisions that feel right for their child.”
Gentler care for fragile newborns
The donor-funded system also makes monitoring less invasive.
Older technology required small needles placed beneath the scalp. The new monitor instead uses small sensor patches that rest gently on the baby’s head.
“You’re no longer poking them with needles,” Tara says. “It’s much gentler for the infant and less distressing for families.”
For parents already facing an emotional moment, even small improvements like this can help ease anxiety.

Honouring the women behind the care
When a baby is admitted into the NICU, mothers and families are often overwhelmed with worry. Nurses play a crucial role in caring for newborns and in guiding families through those uncertain hours.
For Tara, nursing has always been shaped by strong mentors and colleagues — many of them women.
“Nursing is largely women,” she says. “I’ve been supported by incredible leaders and colleagues throughout my career.”
Three decades later, what still inspires her is simple.
“Being part of a family’s journey and seeing those babies go home. That’s the best part.”
For a mother waiting outside the NICU, those first hours are filled with worry. But inside, caregivers like Tara are working with compassion, expert care and the best tools available to understand what a newborn needs.
Thanks to donor generosity, that work is supported by technology that provides a clearer picture — and with it, the knowledge, reassurance and confidence families need in those fragile first hours.

This is just one example of how donor-funded technology can make a difference in how we care for mothers and newborns. Covenant Foundation raises funds to elevate the healthcare experience for those in our care. Will you join our community of donors today?
