PCL Construction tees off in support of the new Misericordia emergency department
Golf tournament drives vital funds to help enhance care at state-of-the-art hospital facility built by PCL
On September 13, PCL Construction hosted a golf tournament in support of Covenant Foundation’s multi-million-dollar campaign for the Misericordia Community Hospital emergency department (ED), opening in November 2023. Bringing together more than 40 employees and project partners for a day of fun, the event raised over $15,000 to help ensure the best possible care for patients and families from Edmonton and beyond.
"Giving back to our community is a cornerstone of our organization. As an employee-owned company, we believe that it’s a shared responsibility to give back to the communities where we live and work.”
- Derek Pearce, Senior Construction Manager, PCL Construction
The funds raised through tournament registration fees, mulligan sales, and skill contests will help the foundation fund specialized medical equipment and training, family-centered care and comforting environments in the modern, new ED.
I’m inspired by PCL Construction’s dedication to the community through both the team’s tremendous work in building the state-of-the-art Misericordia ED and the team’s generosity in fundraising for specialized emergency care within it. The support of PCL and its partners will help make a life-changing – and sometimes lifesaving – difference for tens of thousands of families who rely on the Misericordia ED every year.”
- David Reynar, Corporate Partnerships Officer, Covenant Foundation
From small renovations to complex billion-dollar projects across Canada, the United States, Australia and the Caribbean, PCL is an industry leader that has been building communities since 1906. With its Canadian headquarters in Edmonton, PCL’s local team understands firsthand how important the new Misericordia ED is for their families, colleagues, friends and neighbours.
Built in Edmonton’s west end in 1969, the current ED sees 50,000 patient visits annually in a space that was designed to accommodate only 25,000 patient visits a year. Not only has a growing population with evolving demographics outgrown the physical space, but also revolutionary advancements in technology have changed how Covenant Health’s Misericordia team cares for patients.
The new ED will improve care with more ambulance bays, acute care spaces, radiology rooms, mental health spaces, and treatment and waiting spaces. The modern facility is also designed to be more future proof to prepare for future healthcare challenges such as pandemics, providing more private isolation rooms with segregated air flow systems to prevent the spread of germs, infections and disease.
With the support of donors and corporate partners like PCL, the foundation is helping further equip and support healthcare staff in the new ED. Investments in leading-edge technology and specialized spaces, such as an emergency trauma training space and medical mannequins, can help healthcare staff hone their skills and shave seconds off procedures that save lives.
In addition to helping ensure staff have what they need to improve patient outcomes, donor funds will help bring comfort to patients and their loved ones as they enter the doors of the new ED. Family friendly features such as landscaped courtyards, refreshment rooms, beautiful artwork and interactive children’s play spaces will provide opportunities to decompress during stressful moments.
Thanks to the generosity of PCL and its partners, Covenant Foundation is closer to reaching its multi-million-dollar goal. With the opening of the new facility just two months away and the foundation urgently making its final fundraising push, it’s more important now than ever to rally community support to make care the best it can be at the new Misericordia ED.
The PCL golf tournament is a tremendous example of what we can achieve together when we collaborate with those in our community who align with our mission of advancing health care for the whole person – body, mind and soul.
