Imagine someone you love is nearing the end of life.
You want to make the most of your remaining time together, and you want it to be peaceful. You want space for family to gather, to sit close, share stories, hold a hand or simply be together without distraction.
These are moments almost every family will experience in some way. And when they come, privacy, comfort and togetherness can mean everything.
At Mary Immaculate Care Centre in Mundare, many resident rooms are currently shared. For families spending their final days with someone they love, this can make privacy difficult.
“A lot of the rooms at Mary Immaculate are shared, so at the end of life, you don’t have privacy. That’s why we want to create a Compassion Room,” says Sylvia Zacharkiw of the Mundare Community Board.
A private suite for families

This project will transform an existing space into a Compassion Room – a warm, home-like environment designed specifically for families to spend time with their loved one nearing the end of life, a deeply personal moment.
The Compassion Room is a private suite that will include an adjoining family area where loved ones can sit, rest and remain nearby through long days and nights. Clinical supports will be integrated discreetly into the room, allowing care to be provided while preserving a peaceful, residential feel.
For families, it means more room to gather. It also means more privacy for difficult conversations, reflection, prayer and goodbyes. Most importanly, families can have greater peace of mind knowing they can remain close to their loved one.
A project for the community, made possible by the community

Mary Immaculate serves residents from 11 communities, including Mundare, Vegreville, Lamont and Two Hills, making the Compassion Room a resource that will support families from across the region.
The community has already raised $40,000 toward the $120,000 goal. Now, Covenant Foundation is inviting local families, businesses and community members to help bring the project across the finish line.
Every gift will help create something lasting: a place where families can focus not on the room around them, but on the person they love.
When time together becomes precious, every family deserves a peaceful place to be close.
