Imagine this: you’re caring for your mom who has a heart condition in rural Alberta. Next week, she has a routine heart test scheduled in Edmonton, and together, you’ll spend hours on the road for an appointment that may only take minutes.
By the time you arrive, both of you are already tired from the journey. And when you finally make it home later that day, the energy that could have gone toward rest, recovery or simply spending time together has already been spent getting there and back.
For too many rural patients and families, this has long been the reality.
A routine echocardiogram, which is a common ultrasound used to assess the heart’s structure and function, often requires travel to Edmonton or other larger centres. The travel added stress, extra time and uncertainty for patients already dealing with health concerns.
But that is beginning to change.
Care closer to home
Thanks to donor and community support through Covenant Foundation, patients in Vegreville and surrounding rural communities can now access echocardiograms closer to home. Covenant’s St. Joseph’s General Hospital (SJGH) began performing the heart exams in November 2025 using newly funded ultrasound equipment specially designed to perform heart imaging.
What are echocardiograms?
Echocardiograms are used to evaluate the heart’s structure and function and help diagnose and monitor conditions such as valve disease or heart failure.
For patients experiencing symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath, having access to this type of care locally can make a meaningful difference.
The Vegreville community is already seeing the difference this project is making.
“Having the echocardiogram allows patients to access care in their rural community rather than travelling long distances,” shared Lindsay Rypien, site administrator at St. Joseph’s General Hospital. “Equitable and timely access to health care is a priority, and at SJGH, we are dedicated advocates.”
Working together for the common good
Covenant Foundation is deeply inspired by rural Alberta’s community spirit. Without local partnerships, donor generosity and community support, projects like the echocardiogram would not have been possible.
“In rural communities, it’s all about working together for the common good,” Lindsay shared.
We are committed to supporting rural health care and ensuring that Albertans can access quality care closer to home where they are surrounded by loved ones, support systems and community.
