From Inconvenience to Inclusion: How a Simple Wheelchair Lift Sparked Everyday Joy at St. Joseph’s Home

The change seems simple at first glance: a new wheelchair lift installed at the front entrance of St. Joseph’s Home in Medicine Hat.
But ask the residents and the staff, and they will tell you that this is no ordinary upgrade. It is a quiet revolution in freedom, joy, and inclusion.

Inconvenience

For years, the only way into the front entrance was by stairs. Those using wheelchairs or walkers had to take a long detour to a back ramp. It was inconvenient and uninviting.

“Before the installation of the wheelchair lift, the only access to the front entrance of our building was via stairs,” explains Ryan Wiest, site administrator. “This posed a significant barrier for residents and patients with mobility challenges.

The front landing is also a favourite space and a spot where many residents sit to enjoy the view, feel the sun, and watch life unfold on the street. Without a lift, those in wheelchairs were excluded.

Inclusion

That all changed thanks to a Covenant Foundation grant that funded a new wheelchair lift. With it, the residents were lifted, not just physically but also emotionally. It was the kind of change that restored access, sparked excitement, and made everyone feel seen and heard.

From the moment construction began, anticipation buzzed through the halls. Residents asked for updates daily and eagerly awaited the day they could try it themselves.

More than being a new feature at St. Joseph’s Home, the wheelchair lift has become a symbol of inclusion. The lift has made it possible for residents who use wheelchairs or walkers to independently enjoy the front landing, reconnect with neighbours, and be part of the simple joys of everyday life. Others have requested one-on-one instructions on how to use it, showing a deep desire to reclaim the independence it offers.

This project has changed the way they speak about the home and its values.

“It has made a positive difference in how we communicate with visitors and new residents,” says Catrin Roessler, admin assistant. “It’s reassuring to be able to confidently offer an accessible option at the front entrance. It reflects our commitment to inclusivity and helps create a more welcoming first impression.”

Ongoing Inspiration

Their commitment runs deep. Every improvement, big or small, is guided by a simple but powerful inspiration.

“What inspires us most is seeing how grateful our residents and patients are for even the small improvements we make,” reflects Ryan. “Being able to access additional resources—like grant funding—to enhance the daily experiences of our residents is incredibly rewarding.”

At St. Joseph’s Home, a staircase that once limited movement has been transformed into a gateway of possibility. Through compassion, creativity and the generosity of community donors, a little lift has gone a long way.
